obaona's Star Wars recs
Hi! This is, well, a
recommendation page. I haven't updated it in forever, but the stories
here are still very worth reading. :)

Wow, been a while ...
Repercussions of Time - by ZaraValinor
This is very AU look at
the NJO world, and simultaneously, a time-travel story. It's both at
once simply because Zara takes her character, Ben Skywalker (and he's
most definitely hers here - what a lively, believable character!), and
shows us the galaxy he has known through the time he's trying to change
- specifically, Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side. How things
turn out ... well. ;)
Ahh, the thing I love
about this story is that it burns with realism in every aspect, from
Anakin to Ben's own pain and loss. Obi-Wan is real, a Jedi, Padme is
herself, and the interaction of all of the above isn't played just to
shock the characters (what? you're from the future?) and amuse the
reader, but rather - feels like to me a pointed effort to take a stab at
the nature of these people.
It's excellently
plotted, paced, and executed. READ IT. ;)

The
Things We Do for Love - by LianaMara.
Ahhh, Liana. She
describes this as 'a quirky mechanical romance with a little L/M'. I
hate to disparage her writing skills, but that doesn't do it justice. ;)
Just an adorable fic that will you make you smile, guaranteed. :D
Eluding
What Will Come - by Pallas-Athena.
I worship this fic. It's
an original character fic, set during the Jedi Purges. Just a short
story, but wow. This is a beautiful, beautiful story. Not to be missed.
The characters are completely real, the writing clear and wonderfully
worded, and the whole thing is just so unexpected. I've long thought the
best writers can do both humor and drama, often in the same scene, and
Atty manages that here. Who would think a Jedi purge story would make
you laugh? And yet, this one does.
Just a perfect story.
And, the author recently started an AU off of this story with the main
characters - which makes me uber-happy. *bliss*
The Skywalker
Prophecy Trilogy - by Darth_Lex.
A complete AU of the
entire OT trilogy. Long, long long, but so worth it. Lex brings in all
the original characters for this one, and gives us some new ones to
contemplate as well. Anakin didn't turn and Palpatine was destroyed.
Anakin and Padme rose all four (yes, four) of their children together.
EU characters also play a role, but have no fear - this story stands on
its own so well that if you don't know an EU character, you get by just
fine. And thus begins the story, with the Sith threat not quite dealt
with ...
I don't know where to
even begin in saying what I like about this one! All the characters were
well-written, and the complex plot was fascinating to watch unfold. Hmm
- thinking about it, the greatest things about this trilogy isn't just
that it's well-written (which it is, and I'm repeating myself ...), but
that it is a complete epic. All too often, fanficcers focus only
on character development or inner-thoughts, ignoring the epic nature of
Star Wars itself, but Lex doesn't do that here. Nor does he play with
the characters and ignore the feel of SW. This is all alternate
universe, but he weaves in themes from the original Star Wars, even
dialogue and titles! (The part with 'the return of the Jedi' will make
you laugh.) And this isn't just a set of three stories, but it truly is
a trilogy, creating plot lines and resolving them, and leaving others
over for the next, until the end, where everything makes sense and is
understood.
So. It's completely
well-rounded, fascinating, and just plain good. Give yourself a month to
read these, and sit back and enjoy. ;)

Loss
for Words - by LianaMara.
Yet another poem, and
guess who it's by? ;) She just posted this recently, and I am, I am
proud to say, partially to blame for it's existence. It's Obi/Siri, but
also a lovely insight into Obi-Wan's mind during the Clone Wars. You
don't really need to know who Siri is to understand this poem. Even
Liana says she doesn't know Siri all that well (though personally I
think she totally nailed that character).
Allowances
- by Lady_Moonbeam
A wonderful, concisely
written look at Qui-Gon, that scene with the Jedi Council, and
attachment. The characterization of Qui-Gon in this is spot-on - and it
explains everything in a way that is both believable, and very within
the Jedi philosophy as it appears to be.
Noise and
Sparks - by Gabri_Jade
A very simple, amusing
and accurate look at Mara, Luke, and their ships. It's as good as it
sounds. ;) These stories are not angsty, or a flat out attempt at humor,
but rather what feels to me like a very honest look in an interesting
situation.

Within
a Room Somewhere - by LianaMara.
My very first rec - is a
poem. First off, I don't read poetry. Well, very rarely - moreover, when
I do read poetry, I like the stuff that rhymes. (Yes, I know a lot about
poetry, can you tell? ;) ) This doesn't rhyme, it's poetry, and I love
it to death. It's about Vader, around Ep III, and telling anymore gives
it away. I love this poem. I read it and reread it. I try to think about
beautiful writing like this when I write - it's something to reach for,
even if I never do. It's just beautiful, Liana. :)
